Chamber “One Region, One Voice” Mission to Washington, D.C. A Success

The San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce's 2008 "One Region, One Voice" mission to Washington, D.C. was held from Monday, September 22, 2008, to Wednesday, September 24, 2008. Chamber members had the rare opportunity to meet with high-level Washington, D.C. officials to advocate for regional business issues including transportation, border infrastructure, healthcare, water, alternative energy and the military.

As the November elections approach, I would like to highlight a few of the Chamber's positions regarding our local and state ballot.  The Chamber recently endorsed Judge Jan Goldsmith for San Diego City Attorney.  Jan Goldsmith and incumbent Mike Aguirre are running for a four-year term for this important office, and this marks the first time the Chamber has endorsed in the City Attorney race.

The last couple of weeks have been tumultuous.  No matter which media resource you rely upon, the news about the economy is bleak.  Simply stated, our collective jobs all got more difficult.  Most everybody is either expected to or has decided to do more with less. In May, I devoted my membership report to utilizing your membership to remain active. Many members have done exactly that as attendance at events has increased.

The Fourth Annual InterAmerican Business Awards has been re-branded the “Project Smart Border InterAmerican Business Awards” in recognition of the bi-national companies that have joined together to work toward reducing wait times at the California/Baja California border. This year’s Fourth Annual InterAmerican Business Awards will be held on Wednesday, November 19, 2008, from 12:00 noon-2:00p.m.

After nearly three months of deadlock, Governor Schwarzenegger signed the State Budget on September 23, 2008.  The $144.5 billion budget includes a number of provisions that will impact your business. 

Let’s start with the good news.  The budget includes economic stimulus components such as providing flexibility in overtime laws for exempt high-paid software engineers, expediting the allocation and disbursement of existing transportation and housing bond funds for economic growth and job creation, and authorizing new lease revenue bonds to accelerate capital outlay projects for higher education.
