Chamber to Take a Stand on Airport Site
Two-month process will precede board vote on official position

As the Regional Airport Authority prepares ballot language for the November advisory vote on an airport site, San Diegans are pondering the most significant land-use issue in 50 years.

Recognizing the importance of a fully functional airport to the region's economic viability and growth, the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce is preparing to take an official position on the ballot measure with a thorough vetting of the issues over the course of two months.

"This is a contentious and potentially divisive issue, but one the Chamber absolutely must weigh in on," said Jessie J. Knight Jr., president and CEO of the Chamber. "The health of tourism and trade in San Diego are dependent upon our ability to meet the region's growing air transportation needs."

In June, five of the Chamber's committees -- Transportation, Infrastructure, Legislative, Military Affairs and Public Policy – will analyze the airport issue at their monthly meetings. The committees will hear 10-minute presentations by representatives of three key parties involved in the site-selection issue: the Airport Authority, the San Diego Military Affairs Council (SD MAC) and the Alliance in Support of Airport Progress in the 21st Century (ASAP21).

Each presentation will be followed by a brief question-and-answer period related only to that specific presentation. Once all three presentations are over, the committee chair will moderate a broader discussion of the airport issue.

No votes will be taken at the June committee meetings.

In July, the same three groups will come back to the various committees to answer questions from committee members and give two- to three-minute synopses of their perspectives. They will then leave the room, and the committees will discuss a recommendation for the Chamber.

While the post-presentation questions will surely vary from committee to committee, the process and presentations will be identical at each meeting to ensure fairness of the process.

The Chamber anticipates the board of directors will consider the issue and take a formal position on the ballot measure at the July 27 monthly meeting.

Court Upholds Mandatory Makeup Rule For Female Employees

In a customer service industry, image matters. You want your employees to look sharp to sell your product, service or goodwill, but you have also read about unlawful discrimination, harassment and gender stereotyping. Does your dress code or employee-grooming policy have to be the same for both men and women? Can you require women to wear makeup or men not to?

A recent federal appellate decision put the grooming issue to the test. A casino required its bartenders, men and women alike, to wear the same uniform of black pants, a white shirt and comfortable black shoes, but differed its policy for male and female grooming standards. Women were required to wear makeup, while men were prohibited from doing so. Men were required to have their hair cut above the collar, while women could wear their hair long.
