San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce hosts Governor at Town Hall Meeting
SAN DIEGO – California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and several members of his cabinet met with business leaders and other community members at a town hall meeting in San Diego recently, addressing numerous issues of concern to
Californians and presenting his plan for funding of key initiatives.
Ruben Barrales, President and CEO of the Regional Chamber, served as moderator for the event, and introduced the Governor, who spoke on education, his health care initiative, business' regulatory environment and his proposed revision of the
state's $57.6 billion 2008 fiscal year budget. Following the governor's initial remarks, Barrales led off a spirited question and answer session with the governor.
"The forum allowed San Diegans to hear directly from the governor," said Barrales. "The governor faced some difficult questions directly and with candor. His honesty was key to the success of the town hall meeting, and the Regional Chamber
was proud to host him."

From Volkswagens to Lamborghinis, National City Marine Terminal Has an
Import for Every Budget
Port of San Diego nearing top spot for auto imports on the West Coast
The sleek, aerodynamic lines and the roar of the 580 horsepower engine of the Lamborghini Gallardo catch your attention for a fleeting moment as it whizzes by on the freeway. Burr walnut trim and hand-sewn glovesoft leather adorn the
interior of the regal Bentley Continental parked in front of the trendy restaurant in San Diego's Gaslamp Quarter. An environmentally friendly Honda hybrid passes a gas station, seemingly unfazed by the posted per-gallon prices. What do
these three scenarios have in common? They all feature automobiles that were imported to the Port of San Diego's National City Marine Terminal.
About 375,000 vehicles were imported through the terminal in calendar year 2006 and by 2008, the Port of San Diego anticipates that number to be over 500,000. The automobiles arrive by both rail and vessel and are processed by Pasha
Automotive Services, which operates a 137-acre facility at the National City Marine Terminal. In addition to the luxury vehicles like the Lamborghinis, which arrive by ocean from Italy, and the Bentleys, which come from the United Kingdom,
the Port of San Diego also imports Lotuses and Porsche automobiles.Volkswagens, Audis, Hondas, Acuras, Mitsubishis and Izuzu trucks also account for a large number of vehicle imports. Each car-carrying vessel that arrives has an average of
2,025 automobiles. Some shipments have brought as many as 4,200 cars.

Port of San Diego's Environmental Impact Report for the Old Police Headquarters & Park Project Captures Statewide Outstanding Document Award
The Port of San Diego's Environmental Impact Report (EIR) for the Old Police Headquarters & Park Project is the recipient of the 2007 Outstanding Environmental Analysis Document award from the California Association of Environmental
Professionals. The Port's EIR was selected from nominated EIR documents submitted by various cities, counties and other public agencies throughout the state.
"The talent of port staff continues to shine through on projects such as this," said Sylvia Rios, Chairwoman of the Board of Port Commissioners. "I think this award indicates the staff's extraordinary professionalism," she said.
This EIR analyzed all environmental aspects of the project, while concentrating on the preservation of the historic and architectural integrity of the Old Police Headquarters building. The building, which is listed on the National Register
of Historic Places and has been vacant since 1987, will be adapted into a mix of restaurant, retail and entertainment uses. Other components of the project include a new "Pier Walk Building" that will replace the former Harbor Seafood
Mart, as well as the creation of a new three-acre waterfront park.

Historic 1928 Navy Pier Gets A Facelift
The former Navy Pier, adjacent to the USS Midway Museum, is undergoing a $9 million renovation to make it more structurally secure, environmentally sound and to provide safe and convenient parking for thousands of visitors who visit and
tour the Midway.
Construction work by Port of San Diego contractors began last year and will continue until December 2007 in phases so that the public will continue to have access to parking.
In keeping with its commitment to a "Green Port" standard, the project includes an advanced storm water surface drainage system that will capture run-off water and filter it before it enters the bay.
"The port is committed to making sure all of its projects around the Tidelands are done in an environmentally-friendly way," said Sylvia Rios, Chairwoman of the Board of Port Commissioners. A similar process is being used at Broadway Pier,
which was recently closed for renovation. That project will be completed in October 2007.

MEXICO BUSINESS CENTER AND MEXICAN BUSINESS COUNCIL (CEM) JOIN FORCES TO PROMOTE CROSS BORDER BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES
San Diego - The Consejo Empresarial Mexicano (CEM or Mexican Business Council), has joined with the Mexico Business Center, a division of the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce to promote cross border business opportunities for San
Diego County companies. While each organization maintains its own identity, jointly produced events will help bring additional "Mexico expertise of CEM members to the work of the Mexico Business Center," noted James Clark, Director
General, Mexico Business Center.
San Diego County is the home to more than 800,000 people of Mexican decent, representing almost 38% of the San Diego's total population. In addition, many Mexican nationals keep second homes throughout the county from Rancho Santa Fe to
Rancho Del Rey. An increasing number of Tijuana business owners also have homes in San Diego County and commute to their jobs daily. With Mexico on our border San Diego is an ideal location for entrepreneurs and globally minded
business executives.
The Mexico Business Center was founded in 2003 to assist San Diego County businesses locate markets for their products and services in Mexico, to provide a regional link with Tijuana, and to be an advocate for cross border issues that are
critical to the economic viability of the San Diego/Baja California Region "The Mexico Business Center is an integral part of the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce's regional and global outreach," noted Ruben Barrales, Chamber
President and CEO, who is himself the son of Mexican immigrants. "Working with the CEM brings an added dimension to the services of the Mexico Business Center as it engages additional Mexicans and Mexican-Americans directly in our work,"
he continues.
