Chamber Members Honored For Ethical Business Practices
Kristine Norquist
Contributing Writer
Several San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce member businesses were honored during December's 2005 Torch Awards, conducted by the San Diego Better Business Bureau.
The Better Business Bureau conducts the annual awards program to recognize companies that maintain a solid commitment to conducting their business practices in an ethical fashion. Each year, companies of different sizes are selected
through a regional competition to receive the Torch Award for Marketplace Ethics.
The award program is open to all area businesses and organizations that serve the San Diego and/or Imperial County markets. Companies must be in good standing with the BBB but membership is not a requirement.
Torch Award winners for 2005 include Charco Construction Company, The French Gourmet, Cohn Restaurant Group and San Diego Hospice & Palliative Care.
Charco Construction, a leading residential remodeling and construction company, was a co-winner in the category for 11-24 employees. Founded in 1966, the company has earned a reputation for superior work quality. Charco Construction has
also been voted San Diego's best remodeling contractor in the San Diego Union-Tribune reader's poll for nine consecutive years.
The French Gourmet, a full-service catering company and showcase French restaurant and bakery, won in the category for 25-99 employees. The company was also selected as Pacific Beach's Business of the Year for 2005 and has received the
prestigious Gold Medallion Award from the California Restaurant Association.
Cohn Restaurant Group was the winner in the category for 250-499 employees. The family-run business operates nine restaurants and one nightclub in San Diego and a restaurant in Maui. The restaurants vary wildly in terms of food and design,
but they all share an "obsession to hospitality," as mentioned in the company's mission statement.
San Diego Hospice & Palliative Care was the Torch Award winner in the charity/non-profit category. The not-for-profit, independent healthcare organization provides expert pain management and compassionate care to adults, children and
infants living with serious or life-limiting illness.
Launched as the county's first hospice program in 1977, it has become one of the largest home care hospices in the country and a nationally recognized leader in hospice care, education and research.
The following businesses were recognized as 2005 Torch Award finalists: Cunningham BMW (25-99 employees), American Mortgage Express Financial (100-249 employees), Midland Credit Management, Inc. (250-499 employees), Cox Communications
(500+ employees), Scripps Health (charity/non-profit) and Zoological Society of San Diego (charity/non-profit).
