Doing Good Business is Good for San Diego

Qualcomm Honored for Corporate Citizenship
A Profile On Good Business in Action

The San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce strongly believes that innovative and exemplary companies in the region should be recognized for more than the bottom line. Many area businesses are consistently giving back to the community.

It is our commitment to recognize some of these corporate citizen's in the coming months. Doing good business is truly good for San Diego and companies such as QUALCOMM are the best examples of this practice.

QUALCOMM was recently honored with the Corporate Citizen Group's inaugural Corporate Citizen Award, recognizing the company's ongoing community relation's efforts. Texas-based Alcon Laboratories was also honored.

The Corporate Citizen Group, a community relations firm and industry observer, honors organizations that demonstrate exceptional ethics and earth-friendliness, as well as outstanding vision and leadership in fostering effective community relations.

"QUALCOMM and Alcon are two excellent representatives of our philosophy that good will is good business," says Randall White, president of the Corporate Citizen Group. "Both have amassed admirable reputations as good corporate citizens yet are also global leaders in their respective markets.

"We're delighted that they have been selected as the first companies to receive this recognition."

QUALCOMM was one of 25 organizations nominated. An international panel of community relation's professionals, along with more than 1,300 individuals, voted.

Dr. Irwin Jacobs, founder and CEO of QUALCOMM, accepted the award on September 24, 2004.

"QUALCOMM is honored to be recognized as a leader in corporate citizenship," said Dr. Dan Sullivan, the company's executive vice president of human resources. "It's gratifying to be acknowledged for the role we play in our community, a role that we embrace with dedication and enthusiasm."

QUALCOMM believes that supporting communities goes beyond simply supplying funds for important programs.

"We strive to build engaged partnerships with community organizations," said Sullivan. "We are actively involved at many levels, from volunteering in a grass roots way, to serving on nonprofit boards, to offering technical and managerial expertise. This kind of active role is truly the heart of our social responsibility efforts."

The Chamber salutes QUALCOMM for investing in the community while investing in the bottom line. The trend appears to be catching on.

According to a new report by the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University, charitable giving nationwide reached $240.72 billion (2.2 percent of GDP), the highest rate of growth seen since 2000. Overall, giving grew by .5 percent (adjusted for inflation) from 2002.

Locally, organizations like San Diego Grantmakers are teaching companies that corporate philanthropy and good business practices go hand in hand.

San Diego Grantmakers was founded in 1976 to meet the needs expressed by people involved in organized philanthropy for a forum in which colleagues could address common problems and interests.

Today, after 26 years of serving the San Diego grantmaking community, San Diego Grantmakers has moved into its next stage of evolution and established itself as an independent, freestanding nonprofit. They are one of 29 members of the Forum of Regional Associations of Grantmakers
