CityBeat RED LIST - March 10, 2010
- March 10, 2010

DIGABLE FILM

CityBeat film editor Anders Wright gave The Hurt Locker a score of 8.5 (out of 10). And he's not one to be generous. Back in July, he described it as "a very well-made movie about an American bomb-disposal unit in Iraq that likely will end up on the short list for Best Picture at Oscar time." And so it did, not to mention the whole first-woman-to-win-best-director thing. If you missed it on the big screen, Birth North Park Theatre and West Coast Tavern are screening the film at 7 and 9 p.m. Monday, March 15, as part of the Monday Night Movies in North Park series. Tickets are $7 and can be purchased at West Coast Tavern or the theater lobby. For $10, the WCT folks will add in a glass of beer or wine.

DIGABLE MUSIC

Where will you be Thursday night, music lover? Yep, March 11. There's only one of you and four great shows. At the Belly Up Tavern, Beaters, Maren Parusel, Wire Pony and Jenn Grinels perform as party of yours truly's Local Music Issue release party. www.bellyup.com. Bar Pink (www.barpink.com) has Lovvers and L.A. up-and-comers Abe Vigoda (think Cure meets early My Bloody Valentine). Cozy Bankers Hill spot Tin Can Alehouse is where to catch Tape Deck Mountain and Writer (www.myspace.com/tincanalehouse) and, over at The Casbah, it's a triple-threat set with Transfer(pictured right), Silent Comedy, Black Hondo (www.casbahmusic.com). Whew. Wear your earplugs because your ears don't like loud music nearly as much as you think they do.

DIGABLE ROUND-UP

Like those pork buns you get at dim sum? Try Neighborhood's version---think cha su bao meets a delicate sloppy joe (www.neighborhoodsd.com). Speaking of new menu items, one of our fave Golden Hill spots, Counterpoint (830 25th St.), just added a small assortment of tasty handmade pizza to theirs. It might rain this weekend. If so, stay in and check out North Park boutique Mimi and Red's new online shop (www.mimiandred.com); on Saturday, March 13, starting at 6:30 p.m. Voz Alta (www.vozaltaproject.com) hosts an opening that features two of our favorite urban artists: Saratoga Sake and Persue (creator of BunnyKitty). Over in Little Italy, check out Casa Artelexia, a just-opened father-and-daughter-owned boutique that specializes in handcrafted items from Mexico. artelexia.blogspot.com
