San Diego CityBeat Red List - Sept. 30, 2008

These are the things we dig...

DIGABLE TO-DO

Dime Stories are sort of like a local version of NPR's This American Life. Hosted by author Amy Wallen, people are invited to read a maximum of three minutes of prose -- no poetry -- about pretty much any topic of their choosing. Most stories end up being pretty interesting, life-changing-type stuff. Dime Stories has been happening every first Friday of the month for the last four years, and from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3, organizers and participants will celebrate their fourth anniversary at Swedenborgian Hall, 4144 Campus Drive in University Heights. If you can't make the party, check www.dimestories.org for audio recordings from the last four years.

The Pearl Hotel (1410 Rosecrans St.) just posted the schedule of movies they'll be screening poolside every Wednesday through December. Those not to be missed include The Big Lebowski on Oct. 1, Ratatouille on Oct. 15, Zoolander on Nov. 5, and Tootsie on Dec. 17. And remember, the pool is heated salt water, and if you buy beer or food, you're allowed to take a dip, hence the official event name, The Pearl's Dive-In Theatre. So yeah, you should wear your swimsuits and get up the guts to actually dive in.

DIGABLE EATS

Downtown's Dublin Square Irish Pub & Grill (554 Fourth Ave.) is a good place to watch your favorite NFL teams, partly because they have a big beer selection and nice televisions, but mostly because they offer disgustingly good combos like Banger, Mash and Guinness, Hot Wings and a Pint, Irish Nachos and a Pint and the almighty NFL Combo Platter, all for just under 10 bucks.

DIGABLE SHOPPING

Shopping has turned into more of a cultural experience at the Bazaar del Mundo Shops in Old Town, especially when the shops host one of their special events like the Santa Fe Market. From 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Oct. 3-4, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 5, attendees can enjoy Southwestern art, culture, entertainment, jewelry, woven pillows and more.

DIGABLE SOUNDS

I'm Not a Gun, the electro-acoustic combo of techno man John Tejada and classical guitar virtuoso Takeshi Nishimoto, is getting ready to drop their fourth album, Mirror, Oct. 14. Get ready for the new by brushing up on the old at www.takeshinishimoto.com.

Urban Dictionary Word of the Day: "Douchebaggery: 1. The act of behaving like a douchebag. 2. Senseless behavior." From www.urbandictionary.com.
