Construction Continues ... ! |
 |
|
By CV Project Manager Johny Siman
In the past month, rebar cages for the grade beams and columns were built and installed. The cistern was dug out and the team started filling and compacting the bottom of the cistern. The project was delayed for 1 week when it was
discovered that there was a discrepancy between the plans and the layout of the building. The construction superintendent hired a third party surveyor to confirm the building layout. Along with the design team in California it was
decided the difference was insignificant and would not warrant the time and expense to rotate the building and correct the discrepancy. The superintendent was directed to continue with the work.
The project architect has changed the septic tank design to a bio filter septic system to meet requirements from the wastewater service company that all sewer water be pre-filtered before going into the absorption well.
In the coming month we expect to pour concrete on the grade beams and column bases, begin installation of the grade beams and columns for the warehouse building, raise the bottom of the cistern and start setting the rebar. The cistern
should be completed by the end of the month. It is also expected that we will build and install 50% of the intermediate structural beams.
NOTE: We've raised about 90% of our construction goal, but still have about $50,000 to go to complete our construction budget. Please contact us if you know any supporters who can assist us in our goal – individuals, small family
foundations, businesses with an interest in doing good. We want to get Clinica Verde built so we can move on to the work of programs and medical care for our cherished patients.
I want to help Clinica Verde change lives.
New Clinica Verde Advisors
Clinica Verde is happy to introduce two new Advisors to the board, Michelle Lee and Andrew Bylund.
Michelle Lee is the executive editor of In Touch Weekly, one of the top-selling magazines in the country. Throughout her career, she has contributed to numerous leading magazines, including Marie Claire, Elle, Self, Us Weekly,
Health, Parenting, and Men's Health. Her broadcast credits include: The Today Show, Good Morning America, CBS News MSNBC, CNN, NPR, and more. Michelle will advise us on public relations and communications.
Andrew Bylund is President and Founder of Trailmark Construction Management, which provides services for owners and developers in all facets of the construction industry while focusing on sustainability and new technologies. Under
Andrew's leadership, Trailmark has successfully completed many projects around the western United States over the last five years, including a large residence in Montana that was 100 percent off the grid and powered by wind and
photovoltaic. Andrew is advising us on issues of comprehensive construction cost control.
We're thrilled to count them among our talented advisors!
Thank You, Rotary Clubs of Sanibel, FL and Oakmont, CA!
In the last month, the Rotary Clubs of Sanibel-Captiva, Florida and Oakmont, California warmly welcomed us to speak about our project. Thanks to both clubs for their interest, warmth, and generous hospitality. A special thanks to the
incoming Rotary President of Sanibel, Alex Werner, and to Director of International Service for the Valley of the Moon Rotary Club, Ron Nicholson, for providing support and guidance. Susan was an International Rotary Exchange Student in
Bogota, Colombia many years ago and credits Rotary for igniting much of her interest in international service and global good will. We love Rotary!
Hmmm ... Pepperoni Pizza or Help to Change a Life?
(Psst: We suggest the latter.)
What if you automatically put aside $15 each month to help those in need? For roughly the cost of a pizza, you can help us change lives. Network for Good makes it easy for you to donate to Clinica Verde on a recurring monthly basis. If
you're one of those people who likes to keep things simple, but believes in a long-term commitment to your cause of choice, this is a great option. We love it when you stick by our side!
I'd like to make my contribution recur monthly.
Did you know ...
Every member of the Clinica Verde Board of Directors contributes financially to our project, and each pays for his or her own airfare and accommodations when we travel to Nicaragua. No member of our U.S. leadership team is compensated for
work done for Clinica Verde. We donate countless hours, ideas, expertise, and heart to this project because we believe we can change lives and we have a vision for what our organization will one day become. The inspiration for that vision
is the face of a young girl who has been given a new chance at health, hope and opportunity. Thanks for believing in that vision as well. |

DONOR SPOTLIGHT: Todd Hoddick |

|
Todd Hoddick is the Vice President of Digital Cinema for Barco NV, a Belgian visualization company. He lives with his wife Amy and their two boys, Troy and Ryan, in Fair Oaks, California.
"We chose to support Clinica Verde for several reasons. First and foremost is its goal of reducing suffering in a part of the world where it is the norm not the exception. Not only will the clinic provide quality, low cost, unbiased
healthcare where it is desperately needed, but it will also work to teach women to help themselves. All of this while using our natural resources responsibly, teaching others to do the same.
"The Directors of Clinica Verde care passionately about improving the lives of others and their enthusiasm is contagious, compelling us to want to do more to make changes possible."
I'd like to help too!

Wealthy Cut their Giving
More than 1 in 4 wealthy Americans have cut their philanthropic giving in the past year. That's not good news for organizations that rely on the compassion and generosity of the nation's well-off to at least partially sustain efforts to
improve the lives of those living in poverty. But there's an upside. More than 55 percent of the wealthy agreed with the statement that they felt "an obligation to give back financially."
Although more than 25 percent of the affluent (defined, for the sake of this report, as those who have at least $500,000 in investable assets) said they plan to cut back in charitable giving in response to the economic climate, 13 percent
say they intend to increase their giving to those in need. We applaud each of them.
But even more, we applaud each of you. Without the very human instinct to care for those considered "the least among us," little progress could be made towards world peace and stability. As mothers and fathers and sisters and brothers, we
give thanks for those who act with loving compassion in their everyday lives – regardless of their means.
