On Monday, April 21, Clinica Verde board members in Nicaragua and local officials joined to inaugurate our ground-breaking. Said Clinica Verde board member Cristiana Chamorro at the ceremony: "This clinic is going to be a model not only for Nicaragua, but for other parts of the world, as a way to offer integral care for children from birth to prenatal and postnatal care for the mother, teaching all types of education surrounding health and nutrition with a model of family subsistence -- because only with health do we have hope."

Take a look at the article that appeared in the Nicaraguan newspaper La Prensa: Construirán Clínica Verde.

The plan is to get the site "pad ready," which involves completing the grading and drainage plan and preparing the project for Phase 2, clinic construction. Getting the site ready, says CV board member Peter Stanley, should take 2-3 months. If, at that point, we have the funds necessary we'll continue through to clinic construction. If we don't, we'll pause at "pad-ready" to extend our capital fund-raising campaign.

Clinica Verde needs about $120,000 more to get us to that stage.

This means we need you. We need your support, the support of your friends and family, and anyone you know who believes in our effort to bring a sustainable model of health to impoverished families.

We know we can do this. And with your help, we'll be in a position to change the lives of women and children in need for many years in the future. We believe in this project, and we believe in the extraordinary generosity and vision of our supporters.

Thanks for standing by our side, and for taking a stand for those less fortunate.

I'm with you guys. I'd like to help!

Grim News for Nonprofits ...

A new research advisory from the Foundation Center reports that nearly two-thirds of foundations expect to reduce the number or size of the grants they award in 2009. This means the environment is tough out there for those seeking to alleviate poverty in the world. To read more, go here: Foundation Center Report.

But some individuals are stepping up to fill the gap. Said philanthropist Sanford I. Weill: "Nobody is worth what they were, except liars. So we have all felt pain, but we all can do more, and doing something in a time like this is much more important."

Remember the Phelps Challenge

In November 2008, Joseph Phelps of Joseph Phelps Vineyards generously offered Clínica Verde a $150,000 matching grant challenge to help us meet our fund-raising goal to build the clinic. Help us to meet that extraordinary match. Join the Phelps Challenge!

Awesome Supporter

Richard Michaux (left) is former President and CEO of real estate investment trust AvalonBay Communities. He's been married to his wife Ginny for 43 years and has 6 grandchildren. Now retired from corporate life, in 2007 Dick founded the Michaux Family Foundation for PKU after he discovered his granddaughter Tia was afflicted with the rare metabolic disorder. Here, he talks about why he supports Clinica Verde.

"We were already aware of the plight of this region of Nicaragua after supporting housing and schooling there. When Susan approached us with a project that appealed on many levels and with a passion rarely seen, we were delighted to assist.

"The absence of basic health habits and competent health care are causing needless problems for these families. Susan introduced us to many Nicaraguan officials and citizens who could help make this dream a reality. The opportunity to support a clinic to address these issues attracted us. The sustainable design and materials were a smart fit for the challenges inherent in building and operating a clinic in a third world country. As a prototype, much will be learned that can be applied to future projects to improve care and sustainability.

"We live on a small planet where our decisions and actions affect all peoples. It is important to do some good where one can in North America, Central America and all parts of the world. Working together and guided by a passionate entrepreneur with a vision we can make a real difference. Susan and the Board of Clinica Verde are exercising active philanthropy by designing, building, funding and operating this clinic instead of just writing a check. This type of philanthropy is an example for us all."
