Phelps Match Met!

U.S. Congressman Mike Thompson (D-CA) congratulates Joe Phelps at a reception for Clinica Verde held Sept. 11 at Joseph Phelps Vineyards.

We're happy to announce that Clinica Verde has met Joseph Phelps' $150,000 matching grant challenge. Phelps personally made the challenge to our project in November 2008 to help us meet our financial goal for construction.

Joe's generosity to our work in Nicaragua has been pivotal. His public support of Clinica Verde gave us heft and credibility when we were little more than a dream – and we honor him for his belief, vision and commitment. The final leg of the challenge was met thanks to a generous donation by Andy and Betty Beckstoffer of Beckstoffer Vineyards. Mil gracias to Andy and Betty!

The news was announced at a private reception held at Joseph Phelps Vineyards on September 11 for visiting Nicaraguans Cristiana Chamorro and Antonio Lacayo. Cristiana Chamorro, a journalist and daughter of former President Violeta Chamorro, is a member of the board of directors of Clinica Verde. Her husband, Antonio Lacayo, is a businessman and former Chief of Staff to President Violeta Chamorro. Chamorro and Lacayo gave a presention at the event on "Nicaragua and the Politics of Latin America," followed by a documentary of Clinica Verde's efforts to bring health and hope to impoverished women and children in Nicaragua.

NOTE: Clinica Verde needs to raise about $80,000 more to complete clinic construction. We are urgently working to meet this goal. Please contact us if you know any supporters who may assist us in our cause!
I'd like to help!

Awesome Supporters

Heather and Josh Clark live in the Napa Valley and produce wines under the Saunter label. In addition to this, Josh runs the family's vineyard management company, Clark Vineyard Management, and Heather stays home with their two young children Josephine and Paxton.

"We met Susan and Tim Lyons on one of their first trips to Nicaragua. We fell in love with them, their compassion, and their drive. It is not surprising to us that, nearly 4 years later, their idea of improving the health care in such a poverty stricken area has grown into what Clinica Verde is today.

"Having two young children ourselves, we know how fortunate we are to have great medical care readily available to us. We have seen firsthand the conditions in most hospitals in Nicaragua and find it hard to imagine someone being cared for during their most vulnerable time in such poor conditions.

"Clinica Verde will not only provide women and children with great medical care but it will also be a place where they will feel safe and comfortable. The fact that the design is intelligent and sustainable is just icing on the cake. We are proud to support such a wonderful organization and hope to be around to see Clinica Verde build clinics all over the world."

CV Talks to Harvard Group

We recently got a chance to share our work with a great group from Harvard Business School's Program for Leadership Development. The group was visiting the Napa Valley for their annual reunion. Thanks to Harvard PLD alum Meredith Sasser for coordinating the presentation and to Clinica Verde board member Don Farrar (Harvard, '54) and his wife Joan for hosting the event in their home!

Nicaragua: Poorest Country in Latin America?

A recent article in the Latin Business Chronicle reported that Nicaragua now ranks at the very bottom of Latin American economies, behind Haiti. The article was based on an analysis of the International Monetary Fund's latest World Economic Outlook. Read more here.

Latest Project Update!

By Project Manager Johny Siman

Construction
The next step after the Dirt Work is to prevent the water coming in from the adjacent properties. This consists of building two ditches. The first one is from the northeast corner of the property going all the way down to and crossing the San Nicolas Road. This is 70 meters long and it will keep the water coming in from the highway that goes from Boaco to Muy Muy. The second one goes from the northeast corner to the southwest corner of the property. It is 150 meters long and it will keep the water coming from ex-mayor Vivian Orozco's property on the north and west sides of our property. We will begin this work soon.

Drawings
We are waiting for revisions to Nicaraguan architect Alfredo Osorio's final drawings from the U.S. team.
