Who's Making Headlines in Snohomish County




  • When the Tulalip Resort Casino Hotel & Spa opens in June, it will be the largest hotel between Seattle and Vancouver, British Columbia, and one of the largest spas in the Pacific Northwest. It will be just in time for the 2010 Olympics. In fact, the hotel's first major booking is for figure skaters competing in Skate America October 23-26 at Comcast Arena in Everett; it's the premier international figure skating competition held in the United States and features many Olympic hopefuls.

  • Snohomish County's jobless rate rose slightly in February, a possible sign that the local economy is slowing a bit. Aerospace gained, but only 100 new jobs. Health services added 700 and construction added 400. Local education added 200 jobs.


  • Aviation Technical Services in Everett is set to soar even higher in the area's robust aerospace industry. The maintenance, repair and overhaul business at Paine Field belonged to the Goodrich Corp. for nearly 20 years. Last fall, Goodrich sold the business and its 950,000- square-foot facility to Macquarie Bank Ltd. The company is growing. By the end of 2008, the company intends to add 240 technicians to its staff of about 1,200 people.


  • A group of business operators, students, educators and others met with Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash, at the Sno-Isles Skills Center in Everett to talk about workforce issues.

  • Paine Field – The airport is nearing completion of the design process for the new Fire Station. It will be located near gate S-9 close to the current location of the B-52. Construction is planned to begin this summer with the opening in 2009.


  • A University of Washington branch campus will not open in Snohomish County this fall, but state lawmakers aren't giving up on the idea.


  • Providence Everett Medical Center was recently named a recipient of the 2008 Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence. This award was based on a study of the nation's 5,000 hospitals conducted by the HealthGrades® organization. The study found that Providence Everett is among the top five percent in the nation for clinical quality.


  • The Port's new, state-of-the-art Craftsmen District opened for business March 5th. This is a significant milestone toward the completion of Port Gardner Wharf, as the Port wanted to have a reliable place for its marine tenants to be housed prior to major construction beginning on the rest of the project.
