Who's Making Headlines in Snohomish County



  • Deborah Knutson , former President of the EDC, spent her last day with the organization on Friday, October 29th. After serving 12 years as President of the organization, she left to pursue other opportunities. Deborah will be traveling to Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands for three weeks and is looking forward to spending the holidays with her family. Her new email address is deborahkknutson@gmail.com.

  • The Economic Development Council of Snohomish County , the Everett Area Chamber of Commerce , and the South Snohomish County Chamber of Commerce have agreed to form a new, integrated, regional economic vitality organization ("New Org"). One of the first matters of business is to select a new President / CEO. The new President and CEO would best be suited with skills/background in growing and developing a new organization.   • The Providence Regional Medical Center Everett is the top ranked hospital in Washington for critical care (such as treating a sepsis, respiratory failure, pulmonary embolism or diabetic acidosis), according to a comprehensive annual study recently released by HealthGrades, the leading independent healthcare ratings organization. The HealthGrades study analyzes tens of millions of patients' outcomes – specifically, mortality and complication rates – at the nation's 5,000 hospitals.

  • Seattle Business Magazine recently honored the Snohomish County PUD with its "Green Utility of the Year" award. The recognition called out the utility's green practices, including employees' efforts to recycle, minimize waste and reduce environmental impacts. The PUD has long been a leader in the promotion of energy conservation and development of new renewable energy sources, such as tidal and geothermal energy.

  • A recent cost of doing business survey found the City of Everett as one of the 10 least expensive cities for business. This survey is an annual report providing tax information about costs required to operate a business with the bigger factors being costs for business licenses and property taxes. Everett was the only city out of the ten cities that is located in the Pacific Northwest.

  • As part of the ChargePoint America Program, funded by a near $100 million grant from the DOE, UW Bothell will be receiving six electric vehicle charging stations. The charging stations will be located inside two different parking garages and while the electricity is free, the parking space will carry its typical cost. This program will be deploying over 11,000 charging stations in 5 states (WA, OR, CA, AZ, TN) in concurrence with the rollout of 4,700 Nissan Leaf electric cars in the Northwest.

  • Edmonds Community College received a federal boost of $7 million for health care training. With the funds, the college will begin an innovative program to train low income adults in Snohomish County to fill critical jobs in health care that will become a model for Washington state. In October, the college received word from the federal Department of Health and Human Services that it was awarded $1.4 million, for the first year, of the Creating Access to Careers in Healthcare (CATCH) program.

  • Dr. Eric Murray is in place as the new President at Cascadia Community College following the retirement of Dr. Bill Christopher. Murray comes to Cascadia after positions at North Idaho College and University of Montana Western. He will manage the continued growth of the student population and course offerings, in part, through closer collaboration with the UW-Bothell and Lake Washington Technical College.

  • The Snohomish County PUD has completed an efficiency project with T-Mobile that expects to save 5 million kilowatt hours annually – enough to serve more than 400 homes. The project used an innovative way of tapping outside air to cool IT equipment more efficiently than mechanical cooling. It's the largest energy efficiency project in nearly a decade and the largest data center project the PUD has ever supported.

  • Ryco Machine , a manufacturer of seafood processing equipment, is expanding its facility in Mountlake Terrace. They are adding approximately 10,000 SF by expanding the existing building and constructing a new two-story structure. Ryco has been in business over 25 years, starting with equipment installations on floating processors. The company's on-going growth includes a significant export component.

  • Achilles USA , which has had a presence in Everett for 37 years, has started construction on a new 30,000 SF production facility. The company makes high-performance plastic films for a variety of applications, such as notebooks/binders, blood/plasma bags and automotive seating. The $14 million plant will produce multi-layer polyolefin films, a green alternative for customers moving away from the traditional polyvinylchloride (PVC) product. It is expected to begin operation in April 2011.

  • Diehl Avionics has leased a facility in Everett for final delivery and warranty support to customers of the 787. Diehl manufacturers the innovative interior lighting systems of the Dreamliner, dubbed mood lighting. Diehl is a German firm with an existing US presence in Alabama.

  • Cardiac Science , a medical device manufacturer located in Bothell, announced merger discussions with Opto Circuits of Bangalore, India. Opto, a manufacture of healthcare equipment, is to acquire all outstanding shares of Cardiac Science. The transaction is expected to close by year-end. The local employment impact is yet to be determined. However, previous US acquisitions by Opto have continued to operate as independent business units.

  • In August and September, Impact Washington conducted a survey of over 410 manufacturers statewide from all regions, sectors and company sizes. This report will provide an overview of the state of the industry in Washington. Impact Washington and the EDC of Snohomish County invite you to participate in the 2010 State of Manufacturing in Washington survey results event.
