Who's Making Headlines in Snohomish County




  • The City of Bothell was selected by CTED as the number one LIFT project for their downtown revitalization project. The City will receive $25 million, $1 million per year for the next 25 years. Federal Way was second, receiving $1 million, and third place went to Everett, with $500,000.


  • The new University of Washington branch campus search has narrowed to four locations. From 84 candidates, two in Everett, one in Marysville and one in the Lake Stevens/Snohomish area remain. The preliminary plans are due to the Legislature by November 15.


  • The unemployment rate of Snohomish County in August dropped below what is considered to be full employment, to 3.7 percent. From July to August, the State's unemployment rate dropped 0.3, to 4.6 percent.


  • Everett Community College now offers a virtual assistance certificate program, teaching students all aspects of entrepreneurialism in a virtual environment. Students will create marketing and business plan materials, develop a website, launch their business, and begin daily operations with faculty support.


  • The new 12-story, 370-room Tulalip Tribe hotel is set to open this June. The hotel will also have a luxury spa, $1 million in authentic tribal art, a 30,000 square-foot meeting room and a 15,000 square-foot ballroom.


  • The Stanwood City Council unanimously passed an ordinance to waive transportation fees for businesses wanting to locate in the downtown area. The waiver is for businesses choosing locations in a downtown building built prior to 1980, where the building requires renovation and it is less than 10,000 square feet.


  • After a 28-day tidal-power trial at Admiralty Inlet and Deception Pass, the Snohomish County PUD found that the underwater currents may be enough to make up to 100 megawatts of electricity, powering over 60,000 homes.


  • Construction for the new Mukilteo Station has officially begun. Sound Transit and the Federal Transportation Administration are spending $19.2 million and hope to have service running between Seattle and Mukilteo in less than a year.
