By Carissa Rivas Trans fats or Trans fatty acids, are created when hydrogen atoms are added to liquid vegetable oils to turn them into solids. This process is called hydrogenation. Food manufacturers add the resulting trans fats to baked goods, snack foods (especially chips), and processed foods to increase their shelf life. Many stick margarines and fried foods like French fries and onion rings also contain hefty amounts of trans fats. Like every other fat, trans fats offer a high amount of calories, 9 calories for every gram. However, where monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats may have beneficial effects on your cholesterol, trans fats cannot offer the same. Trans fats raise your LDL (bad cholesterol), but also lower your HDL (good cholesterol). High LDL cholesterol and low HDL cholesterol have been linked most commonly to heart disease, but they have also been linked to deadly complications related to diabetes. Advice: Read food labels carefully, keep in mind that if there are less than 0.5 grams of trans fats per serving, food manufacturers are allowed to record it as zero. Instead check the list of ingredients. If there are hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils listed, there may be some trans fats. Avoid cooking with ingredients that contain trans fats and are higher in saturated fats, such as butter, shortening, and stick margarine. Instead, use ingredients that contain no trans fats, are high in monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fat, and are low in saturated fat, such as canola, safflower, sunflower, corn, and olive oils. Trans fats aren't the only things to consider when trying to lose weight. They may be the new thing, but it is still important to keep in mind saturated fat, total fat, cholesterol, and number of calories in your food.
