Dear Susan,

Help! How can I get my kids and spouse to eat more veggies-especially those dark leafy ones that are supposed to be good for us?

Lillian Reyes
Newport Beach, CA

Dear Lillian,

If your kids or your spouse aren't eating important veggies such as spinach, broccoli or collard greens, they are missing out on some of the most nutritious foods available!! Here are some ideas to try and change some of those "bad" habits:
*Combine veggies with their favorite foods. For example, why not make a habit of adding spinach to your marinara sauce? You can also try adding spinach and/or bell peppers to scrambled eggs.
*Experiment with adding different vegetables to your family's favorite soups or casseroles. My favorite is always broccoli and cheese soup or tuna casserole with peas and carrots.
*Finger foods are fun for kids as well as easy to prepare. Let kids try different vegetables with a variety of dipping sauces. Bell peppers are good dipped in your favorite low fat salad dressing or broccoli and asapargus dipped in a low fat cheese dip. Of course their is always the famous ants on a log, celery with peanut butter and topped with raisins.
*Try using as much spinach in your salad as your family will allow, sometimes when it is mixed with romaine lettuce you can hardly tell. The produce aisle is huge, experiment with a variety of veggies until you figure out which ones your family enjoys most and stick with those.
*Involve your kids in the preparation of the meals. They will feel a sense of pride in making something themselves and will want to eat what they have created. Beyond teaching them about healthy food choices, being in the kitchen can also be an opportunity to teach them some practical math and reading skills.

Thanks for the great question!

To Your Health,

Susan Johnson

"Building a Support System"

By Carissa Sanchez

For the best chance of successful weight loss, you need the support of people whose decisions will affect your efforts. Having a workout partner is a great idea. Not only do they provide motivation and support, but they can also make your workouts more enjoyable. When you're on your own, it's easy to skip workouts and say," I'll start my diet on Monday." But once someone else is involved, there is a sense that one is more likely to stick with it and work harder than they would on their own. Of course it always depends on the buddy. Having a diet partner can be helpful if it's a positive relationship where you encourage each other to stick to realistic goals. However, if your diet buddy constantly nags about your food choices, brags that she's lost more weight than you or suggests a donut stop after your morning run, find a new buddy! Focus on supporting each other in setting goals, figuring out how to promote healthier eating and celebrating each other's success. Here are some other good ideas to reap the rewards of a buddy system:

*Help someone else succeed: Wheather you coach a friend who is training for a 5 k or teach a child to swim, you will feel knowledgeable, and they will appreciate that help you have given them. Plus, when you finally do solve your own health issues, these people are the ones who will help you celebrate your success!

*Hire a pro: A personal trainer or coach can help you break through your fitness roadblocks and set higher goals. You'll accomplish more than you ever dreamed.

*Cultivated cheerleaders: Although fitness is not necessarily a team sport, support and encouragement always help. When you make lifestyle changes, your actions will likely affect many people. If you plan to lose weight by changing your food-shopping, cooking habits and eating out then everyone at home will be affected. That's why it's a good idea to engage them from the start. Educate these friends and family members about weight loss and your goals. As a result, your new healthy habits, will reap rewards for you and your family.

If you don't have a buddy near by a phone buddy is just as good. Update each other and make a daily time to sit down and talk about what is going on.

Losing weight can be very difficult but if you have a strong support system or have set your mind to your goals it can done and it can be lot's of fun!
