Many shoppers spend even more time scrutinizing food labels and packages, studying ingredient lists and labels for low fat, low cholesterol items. In fact, eight out of ten Americans say they are seeking out these types of foods in order to reduce their risk of heart attack and stroke. Fortunately, heart-healthy shopping can be simpler than many people realize. According to dieticians, it helps to look for foods carrying the American Heart Association Food Certification Program's heart-check mark. The foods bearing the Association's red heart with the white check mark have been evaluated to ensure they meet the American Heart Association's nutritional criteria and can be part of a heart-healthy diet for healthy people over the age of two. In order to carry the heart-check mark, a single serving of a food product must: • be low fat (less than or equal to 3 grams); • have low saturated fat (less than or equal to 1 gram); • have low cholesterol (less than or equal to 20 milligrams); • have a sodium value of less than or equal to 480 milligrams for individual foods; and • contain at least 10 percent of the Daily Value of one or more of these nutrients protein, vitamin A, vitamin C, calcium, iron or dietary fiber. Meats must meet the USDA's standards for extra lean. The heart-check mark is a convenient grocery shopping tool because you can see the information on food products when you're making your purchasing decision. Amid the dizzying array of food healthy claims, you can rely on the American Heart Association's heart-check mark. Shoppers can be confident because the information comes from what many consider the public's most reliable source of nutrition information, the American Heart Association. " 5 Simple Ways to Cut those Calories" By Carissa Sanchez Trying to lose weight is hard and sometimes we need to cheat a little to get through the day! Well, here are some healthy tips to get through the day without having to cheat! By simply cutting caloires you can avoid having to add them. 1. Check out the vending machine: These little machines get such a bad rap but they actually contain the right idea. A vending machine is full of single serving snacks so instead of snacking on a super size bottomless bag of lays you are just getting a small portion. Making the right choice in your snack is also very important, chose snack crackers or trail mix rather than chips or candy. 2. Start with your vegetables: You can reduce the amount you eat of your main course if you start with a small green salad or bowl of fresh veggies with light dressing. Research shows people who eat these items before a main course eat 10% fewer calories over the course of the day. Even if you don't do it every night, adding this habit in from time to time can really help and who knows it may end up sticking! 3. Dip it! : Try ordering your dressing on the side and dipping your fork in it before every bite. I didn't think this would satisfy me but it actually works and I enjoy my salad so much more without a gallon of dressing on it. This little trick could help cut hundreds of calories! Dressings and sauces contribute to the most added calories in your meal so asking for both of them on the side is the biggest calorie saver! 4. Watch the liquid calories: The worst culprit is probably those fancy coffee drinks everyone has in their hands. Those tasty treats can contain up to as many calories as an entire lunch. A 16-ounce Starbucks Mocha made with whole milk has 400 calories, the same number of calories found in a grilled chicken sandwich. The Mocha also contains 22 grams of fat and 33 grams of sugar, yikes, that will really crush all your hard work at the gym! A regular cup of coffee is probably the best for you but if that just doesn't satisfy you quite the same try slimming down your mocha by requesting skim milk and a sugar free sweetener. 5. Move it! : The next time you take a long call on your cell phone get up and start moving. Slip on your sneakers and stroll the halls or better yet take it outside and get some fresh air while you are at it! If you did this for 10 minutes every workday at a moderate pace, you'd burn close to 1,000 calories a month and lose about 3 pounds a year. Now if I could only figure out how to do this while typing at my desk I would be set!!
