By Carissa Sanchez I love eating out. There is just something about the whole experience, being seated, the appetizers, the good conversation while you wait for your food, the delicious main course, the awesome dessert and then raving to your co-workers of the great dining experience. However, whether you go out to eat for convenience or pleasure it may not always be the healthiest choice. Restaurants tempt us to eat huge portions, rich sauces and high fat sweet treats. I know most of us know the good rules of thumb to follow when dining out but since it's a new year I thought I would refresh everyone's memory of the good practices to follow when eating out. • Share a plate: Most places you go the servings are big enough to feed two. So instead of trusting yourself to only eat half, split it from the get go. Trust me, it will save you from feeling guilty about eating the entire meal and save you the extra unnecessary calories. • Order half to go: If the people you are dining with don't want to share a plate, ask your server to box up half your order before he even brings out your meal. "Out of sight, out of mind" and lunch leftovers for the next day! • Avoid the killer starters: Skip on the bread, appetizers, chips and salsa. These items can leave you full even before your meal arrives to the table. Instead of overeating, save your appetite and calories for the main course. • Tailor your order: Requesting sauces on the side and dressings on the side is a great way to cut the calories because you only use what you need. Add just a little at a time and hopefully when you think it's just right you will see just how much is left over that you saved calories on. Another good idea is asking for open faced burgers or sandwiches and requesting no or light cheese. • Use your calories wisely: Avoid any sugary beverages such as regular sodas and sweetened cocktails. Instead, opt for water, diet sodas and wine. • Stay away from the meal deals: Nothing good can come from a meal deal. All you are getting is extra unnecessary fat and calories and where's the deal in that? You will have a much better time choosing a sensible meal rather than trusting yourself to unlimited trips to a buffet line. • Slow down: eating slowly allows the message of satiety to get to the brain before you fill up too much and become overly stuffed. On the plus side, many restaurants and chains are now offering better choices and variety, such as grilled vs fried chicken, fruit instead of fries, and water bottles instead of colas. Also remember that everything in moderation is okay! " Men May Want to Give Salad Another Try" By Carissa Sanchez I read today that The National 5 A Day program is encouraging men, who have greater health risks than women for some diseases, to shoot for nine servings of fruits and vegetables each day and women to aim for seven servings a day. They have changed the recommended servings to be greater for men because more than two-thirds of men are overweight or obese, and men have a higher death rate for a handful of certain diseases than women. Those diseases include colorectal cancer, cardiovascular disease, and lung cancer. So men, it's time to eat your fruits and vegetables! I think the decision to make this lifestyle change should be easy, live a longer more healthy life or gamble with a life taking disease. You decide! You may be thinking, "9 servings, really?!?", but it's not as hard as you think. Let's take a look at what you can count as a serving: • an 8 oz glass of 100% fruit juice • 1 medium banana • 1 cup or a large handful (or two if you want to go the extra mile) of chopped or diced raw veggies. The more color the better! • 1 medium apple • 1 cup of lightly cooked vegetables (less cook time=more nutrients) • 1 cup cooked beans or peas • 1 cup dried fruit (unsweetened, unprocessed, preservative-free) I think it is important enough to at least try, it's a chance to live your life disease-free! Who knows you may be surprised at how well you do at squeezing these power foods in your day and how much you actually enjoy them! So, the next time you hear "side of chips or side of fruit," go with the fruit for a change!
