The truth is that getting used to a whole grain diet can be hard, many of us have been choosing white breads and pastas for years and it just doesn't taste the same. However, you may not be aware of the many benefits of choosing a whole grain diet may have on your heart and body. Once you begin to incorporate more whole grains into your diet you will begin to realize that "once you go whole grain you can never go back!" Health benefits of choosing a variety of whole grain products each day can be found in a 15% to 25% reduction in premature death from all causes. You can also reduce your risk for: Cancer Heart disease and high cholesterol Stroke High blood pressure Obesity Type 2 diabetes Bowel disorders Identify whole grain foods when you are shopping: Look for the words "whole grain" in large letters on the packaging. Look for the "100% whole grain" health claim on the package, which means that the product follows the FDA's approved claim: "Diets rich in whole grain foods and other plant foods, are low in total fat, saturated fat and cholesterol, may reduce the risk of heart disease and certain cancers." On the list of ingredients look for the word "whole" in front of the grain to be named first on the list if you want to get a food that is high in whole grains. Ways to add whole grains to your daily diet: Choose whole grain breads, tortillas, bagels, pita pockets and rolls. Enjoy low fat whole grain crackers, baked tortillas chips or a brown rice cake as a snack Choose whole grain pastas (macaroni, spaghetti, noodles), pancakes or waffles for a change Pop popcorn Try whole grain muffins and other baked goods Choose an instant or read-to-eat whole grain cereal for breakfast (tons of variety in you grocery store, just check the labels) Add whole grains to mixed dishes or casseroles. Add wild or brown rice to your favorite soup, stew or casserole. "Organic vs. inorganic" By Carissa Sanchez Have you ever found yourself in the produce aisle not being able to decide whether to get the "regular" carton of strawberries or the "I'm not quite sure what this means, organic" carton of strawberries? Don't worry you are not alone! Often times we will hear various health topics on the news stating that something is better for you than the usual but we are never to sure why. I am sure everyone has heard "organic is better for you", but why, why is the more expensive, smaller, organic package of strawberries better for you? Foods referred to as "organic" are really "organically grown" or "organically produced", this means they have been grown or produced with little or no synthetic fertilizers or pesticides and no antibiotics or hormones. Does this mean that the product is all natural and pesticide free? Maybe and maybe not. Organic farmers use other methods to protect their crops. They use crop rotation to minimize damage to their crops and rely on certain insects that are natural predators for other insects to keep their crops safe. However, farmers may use chemicals found naturally in the environment, such as sulfur, nicotine, copper, as pesticides. When these don't work, organic farmers may use other biological or botanical substances approved by the National Organic Program of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. All rumors aside, no scientific evidence has shown that organically produced foods are healthier or safer for you. Both farming methods, organic and conventional, supply nutritionally comparable foods. Do they taste and look the same? Studies show no significant flavor difference. Taste differences tend to come from the food varietal, its growing conditions, and its ripeness at harvest. Although they use to differ in appearance in the past, most of today's organic foods compare very favorably in appearance when compared to the conventionally grown products. So why is this product more expensive? Higher cost is usually due to production (more labor intensive, transportation, processing and retailing), more crop losses, and smaller yields. These costs may begin the go down as the development in this field continues to advance. The National Organic Program ensures that the production, processing, and certification of organic foods match a comprehensive standard. So if you are already an organic shopper or are thinking of "going organic" you can feel confident that you will be getting a quality product.
