The type of nut is not important. If you have heart disease, eating nuts instead of a less healthy snack can help you more easily follow a hearthealthy diet. Most studies have found that people who include nuts as part of a heart healthy diet have lower LDL, aka "bad," cholesterol level in their blood. Eating nuts reduces your risk of developing blood clots which can cause a fatal heart attack. Nuts improve the health of the lining of your arteries. Lots of nuts are also rich in omega-3 fatty acids. The omega-3s are a healthy form of fatty acids that tend to help the heart by, preventing dangerous heart rhythms that can lead to heart attacks. Keep in mind that it's the whole "raw" nuts that have the benefits. When they are covered in chocolate, sugar or salt the benefits are not quite as high. Because they contain a lot of fat and although that fat is very good for you, eat nuts in moderation. A small handful a day is the recommend serving. Nuts contain Vitamin E which is thought by some researchers to help protect your cells against some forms of cancer Nuts contain fiber, and a high-fiber diet is thought to help prevent heart disease and diabetes. "Lunch Break 101:" By Carissa Sanchez If you don't order lunch from Susan's or you only order a few lunches a week there is no reason you should stray away from your healthy eating. Whether you are eating out or packing a lunch from home, here are a few important tips: Make sure you stay away from the fried foods. Order a side salad or fruit with your sandwich or burger. If you are packing your lunch, pack a healthy snack like veggie sticks, whole wheat snack crackers or fruit rather than potato chips or snack crackers high in Saturated fat. When choosing your condiments, try holding the mayo or a light mayo with your sandwiches. If you're eating a salad stay away from the creamy dressings, try vinaigrettes instead. Again, spare your body from the unnecessary fats, especially saturated fats found in spreads and creamy dressings. Stick to lean meats like turkey or chicken rather than beef. Even better, try vegetables or veggie patties. Sometimes it's a nice change to have a veggie sandwich with low fat cheese and maybe a light Italian dressing. If it's a sandwich with deli meat, try taking half the meat off and ask for extra vegetables. If you are packing your own beverage, pack a bottle of water. If you need a little extra flavor, try a Crystal Light water enhancer. Trust me your body will thank you! Packing your lunch is always a good idea; it's a good way to monitor what you are eating and an easy way to save money. It's learning how to pack a healthy lunch that's the tricky part!
