Dear Susan,

I know that it is important to eat a balanced diet that is low in sodium, but why? Why is watching my sodium good for me?

Kate Silliman,
Temecula, CA

Dear Kate,

Sodium is important to our overall body function because it regulates our fluid balances. What does this mean? It means that if we don't have enough sodium in our body it can cause dehydration and if we have too much it can result in swelling, shortness of breath and can lead to high blood pressure. Seems like we can never win!

Your body only needs about half a gram of sodium per day, and the American Heart Association recommends that you consume no more than 2.3 grams a day which is equivalent to about a teaspoon of table salt. The average American consumes at least 9 grams of sodium every single day!

There are a few main reasons why we should try to keep an eye on our sodium levels:

1. The heart works better and more efficiently when we have lower sodium levels.
2. The chances of having high blood pressure are reduced when we have lower sodium levels.
3. Other conditions such as, asthma, migraine headaches, kidney stones and ulcers may improve with a lower sodium diet.

Tips to reducing your sodium intake:
• Avoid frozen prepared foods as much as possible. If these foods are a part of your diet routine, make sure you choose the brand lowest in sodium.
• Read your food labels and become familiar with the foods that have the highest sodium content. Look for the reduced-sodium options.
• Don't add any salt to your food. To reduce temptation, remove salt shakers from the table, even when you eat out.
• Instead of salt, season your foods with citrus juice, vinegar, peppers, garlic and fresh herbs.
• Limit consumption of salty snack foods like pretzels, peanuts and potato chips.

Once you have made a gradual change, your taste for salt will decrease, you will barely notice that it is not there anymore and instead you will notice how much more flavorful your food really tastes.

Thanks for the great question!

To Your Health,

Susan Johnson

"Want to Lose That Gut?"

By Carissa Rivas

It's probably the number one concern I hear among men and women, "how do I get rid of my gut?" Well, here are some easy ways to adjust your diet to help you lose that little stubborn pooch that won't go away!

Believe it or not, you can eat more: Now how often do you hear those words pertaining to losing weight? The trick is, you have to eat the right foods more often! Some good foods to include are: low fat dairy, such as yogurt and cheese, raw nuts and seeds and plenty of fruits and vegetables. Think about eating every three to four hours, keep that metabolism going! Research has shown that those who consume 400 more calories per day and eat healthier foods are two-and-a-half times less likely to develop abdominal obesity than those who take in fewer calories but consume more fatty foods with less fiber.

C's the day! Research has shown that eating foods rich in vitamin C help in the combat against belly flab. Most people tend to think that vitamin C is just in orange juice or other citrus fruits, which are great but, but there are also some vegetables that are packed with vitamin C. Try broccoli, sweet bell peppers and tomatoes for an extra dose of vitamin C.

Power up on Protein! Eating a small amount of protein makes you feel more full and leads to overall weight loss, especially in the mid section.

Go mega on your omega-3s! When you eat foods like walnuts or salmon, which are loaded with omega-3s, you help to reduce the production of adrenaline, a stress hormone that contributes to an increase in belly fat.

Get a move on! Last but not least you have to get in some physical activity from time to time and trust me any little bit helps! Ideally, all of us would love to find an hour a day to devote to exercise but realistically for some of us that just can't happen, so you have to improvise. Park further, walk to talk to a co-worker rather than email, walk to lunch if possible and take the stairs versus the elevator, every little bit helps. If at night you find yourself with an extra 10 minutes, do some ab crunches before hitting the hay!

"How to Get Your Children to Be Fit Kids "

By Carissa Rivas

Ever feel like you're being watched?
Well, you are! Kids watch our every move, so it is very important to set a good example. If you want your kids to be active, you have to be active. Try things like parking further from your destination or taking the stairs versus the elevator at the mall. Also, show them that it can be fun! Instead of using physical activity as a punishment, use it as a reward. Good behavior earns them a ticket to the skate park or bike ride with mom or dad. Be a good example and make physical activity a priority in the family as a whole.

Make it a daily habit
You have to set aside a time that works best for you and stick to it. You can get up early or schedule a time at the end of every day. Most importantly involve your kids, whether it's taking care of the family pet in the morning or shooting some hoops after dinner it needs to be consistent. Start small and let them set the pace. Add new and more challenging activities as you become fit!

It's time to put the TV marathon on hold
As the electronic industry is on a rise the physical activity levels are at a big low! The easiest way to get your kids up and active is to limit the time they spend watching TV, surfing the internet, text messaging and playing video games. Try limiting it to a couple hours a day, that way they can chose to use it up all at once or break it up, but maybe they won't be sedentary for as long.

Fitness is fun, and here's how:

Be a kid again
Show your children, especially the younger ones, just how much fun being active can be. Hop like a bunny, run like a gorilla, walk like an elephant and stretch like a cat. Be goofy and let loose!

Join the fun
Kids want you to play with them and they will more than likely put up less of a fuss going outside to play if you go with them for a bit. Play catch, get the family together for a big game of hide-and-go-seek or tag, or have a sprinting contest. Make up your own contests like, how many goals you can score in a minute or how long you can jump rope without any mistakes. Not only will they be physically active but they will put their creativity into play as well.

Make it a friendly competition
Involve some competition with those chores, no one wants to do them but if you have to why not try making them fun? Who can make their bed the fastest? Who can pull the most weeds? Who can put all their dirty clothes in the laundry basket? You can turn anything into a friendly challenge.
