Typically I reach for foods that are crunchy and salty, like wheat thins or snack crackers. However, because I am aware of when I am snacking I keep in mind to only have a little bit and then focus on how to really deal with my stress. Unfortunately this isn't the case for many people who are mindlessly eating out of stress. This eating may become excessive and lead to weight gain. In turn this causes even more stress. So, how do we break this cycle? *Don't allow yourself to get to hungry: I am always advising our customers to eat every three hours. When you allow yourself to get too hungry and go too long without eating your blood sugar drops. When your blood sugar drops you just don't "think right" and your brain isn't going to read its signals very well. For your body to function properly, especially under stressful situations, it needs to be properly nourished. To avoid this situation try not to skip any meals and balance your meals throughout the day. *Be mindful of your portions: Typically when people are on a stress binge they don't think about what they are eating or how much they are eating. So, if it's a chocolate bar that's going to "fix" everything try going for a dark chocolate bar with almonds or a bite sized snickers. Smaller portions help keep your total calories under control and the stress weight off. *Choose healthy snacks: Eating the "right" snacks could be your cure-all. Choose snacks high in fiber/whole grain carbohydrates and protein to help keep you feeling full longer and to give you the energy you need to get through any stressful moment. Avoid snacks high in fat and sugar, they will only make you feel worse. *Deal with your stress: I know, "easier said than done," right? It is so important to try and find ways to manage your stress. Have you ever tried yoga or some sort of meditation, it really works for some people. Personally, I find my stress relief in a good body sculpting class at the gym, play time with my young son or catching up with my girl friends over coffee. Whatever it may be that helps you unwind and let go of the stress, do it everyday or as much as possible. Stress is so common in all of our lives, but we can learn ways to avoid the unhealthy weight gain that it could possibly bring on. If you have concerns with weight gain that may be stress related talk to your doctor or nutritionist. "To Sleep In or Exercise..." By Carissa Sanchez I can't count the number of times I have told myself that I was going to get up and work out in the morning and all I ever end up doing is exercising my snooze button!! I figure if I get up and go I won't have to worry about motivating myself to go after a long day at work when all I want to do is spend time with my little one. I have co-workers who get their daily workout in the morning and they rave about the energy they have throughout the day. But working out in the morning doesn't only give you great energy throughout the day, it also has some other great benefits. "Morning exercise revs the metabolism and jump-starts energy levels, actually accelerating your ability to burn calories," says Amy Burleson Sullivan, PsyD at the Dayton VA Medical Center in Dayton, Ohio. "It gets the endorphins flowing so that when you're finished you have greater acuity, less anxiety, improved mood, and increased ability to concentrate, all of which contribute to a better day," explains Sullivan. People who exercise in the morning are more likely to keep up with their exercise routine because there is less chance of things coming up during their busy day that will take them away from gym time. People who workout in the morning tend to be more relaxed and rested because they have gotten their workout done and because exercising in the evening can make it more difficult to get to sleep. So how do you keep from hitting the snooze button and get the motivation to get out of bed everyday? Mind over matter. You have to accept that it's not going to be a walk in the park and you're going to have to put a lot of work in. You may not see the results you want immediately, but don't get discouraged. Set realistic goals and remember it's not how fast you do it but how well it's done. Be Prepared. Before you go to bed at night get everything ready for the morning. Set out your outfit, socks and shoes so that you don't have to look for everything in the dark! Rock out. Just because you might feel like the rest of the world is sleeping doesn't mean you have to be quite. Load up your MP3 player with your favorite energizing beats to keep you going. Most importantly, have fun! Find something that you enjoy and stick to it, if you are sweating that's all that matters. Also, don't be afraid to try something new every once in a while, you never know when you may find a new fitness love!
