Dear Susan,

How does aspartame help people with diabetes?

Kate Robinson,
Fontana

Dear Kate,

Aspartame offers people with type 1 and type 2 diabetes greater variety and flexibility in budgeting their total carbohydrate intake and helps them satisfy their taste for sweets without affecting blood sugar. People with diabetes are more likely to stick with a healthful meal plan when they can include foods they enjoy. In addition, consuming products with aspartame can reduce calories, which helps people with diabetes manage their weight. Although this is a low calorie option, it is a processed sugar so make sure to consume products containing aspartame in moderation.

Thanks for the great question!

Susan Johnson

You're Either a Rock Star or a Monster

By Erin Doyle

Energy drinks are the latest craze in this day's fight to keep awake and alert. The 4 shot 6 pump latte that used to be the way to shoot caffeine into your system has taken a back seat to the bubbly sweet cold cans of pure energy.
The black and silver cans with splashes of bold colors promise strength, power and speed. They also promise very large amounts of caffeine and sugar. The caffeine level isn't always indicated on the label; but it can be anywhere from 80 mg to several times that per can. Other ingredients found in these drinks are taurine an amino acid, and guaranaa South American herb that is an additional source of caffeine- yes more caffeine!
Vitamin B is sometimes added in small amounts to make energy drinks appear healthy, but they probably contribute very little. So if you are trying to justify all of the caffeine you're taking in by telling yourself that you are also getting your vitamins you may want to think of a different reason.
The problem with younger kids and teens drinking these energy drinks is the speed in which they drink them! They are cold, carbonated and taste like liquid candy! Teens as well as adults confuse these types of drinks with sports drinks like Gatorade. Sure the energy drinks boost your energy level, caffeine and sugar will do that; but they also dehydrate the body and can slow down the body's ability to metabolize. Sports drinks help you stay hydrated during exercise. They also provide carbohydrates in the form of sugar and electrolytes that may be lost through perspiration.
It's probably best that energy drinks are consumed seldom rather than daily. Especially for teenagers, they really don't need all of that caffeine. Water is really the best beverage!

"Summer Shape-Up!"

By Zeena Dhalla

The warm weather is here and it's time to slip on those bikinis and shorts. Are you nervous about baring it all this summer?

Remember that to feel good and look shapely requires commitment to your exercise regimen all year long. If your schedule changes in the summer (moms with school kids, shorter work commute due to less traffic, vacation breaks) it's a perfect time to try out some new activities in order to squeeze in your workouts. Following are some ideas for this year's summer shape-up:

THE DAYLIGHT- With the sun setting later you have a full three more hours to play tennis, go for hikes, push the stroller, play catch with the dog and get in an after work round of golf. Since most TV shows are on hiatus, give the TIVO a break and get outside!

LUNCHTIME IN THE GYM- If lunchtime is now your ideal workout time, then save yourself from the heat of the sun and get into a gym. Most clubs will offer a 1-3 month option for you since your schedule may be different during this time of year. Changing your club for a few months is a GREAT way to change up your workout a bit.

TAKE ADVANTAGE OF YOUR THIRST- Since it's warmer, you may be thirstier which will force you to drink more water. Listen to the signs of your body! Usually when you are thirsty, it already means that you are dehydrated so try not to let yourself get thirsty and pour healthy liquids into your body in large quantities.

TAKE AN ACTIVE VACATION- It's tough to really control your eating while on vacation. However there is no reason you can't get exercise into your trip! Go for an early morning run to enjoy the scenery, get in the pool for a few laps before cocktails begin, take the resort "aqua aerobics" class, do some basic exercises in your hotel room before bedtime or try out golf, tennis, horseback riding or scuba diving as a new activity. Your routine may be shaken up this summer, but use it as a positive way to try new activities. Remember that if you change your exercise regimen, you will build new muscles and therefore increase your calorie burn. Make this the summer you are in the best shape of your life!
