Whether you paddle around the pier on Sunday or simply attend to support clean
water, your presence makes an impact.
The paddle around the OB Pier features all sorts of paddlecraft – surfboards, SUPs, kayaks, outrigger canoes, etc. – in a non-competitive paddle to raise awareness to pollution problems along San Diego's coastline. We will be featuring
our Know your H2O program this year. We encourage people to walk, bike, carpool or take public transport to the OB Pier on Sunday. (by the corners of Newport and Abbot Ave's in Ocean Beach) To make it easier,
Ocean Beach Surf and Skate will be offering loaner boards to experienced paddlers,

Join us to welcome Margo to Ocean Beach! On July 3rd ocean activist Margo Pellegrino launched a two month paddling journey on the Pacific Ocean in her outrigger canoe. Beginning in Seattle, she plans to complete her voyage in San Diego at
the Paddle For Clean Water. During the two months of her journey, she will paddle approximately 1,500 miles making around 60 stops along the West Coast to highlight the need for coastal conservation and pollution prevention.
Thanks to Clif Bar for sponsoring the event again this year. Additional sponsors include Stone Brewing Co., Cali Bamboo, 91X, Ocean Minded, Ocean Beach Surf and Skate, Surfrshot.com, SIMR Surfboards, Ocean Beach Geriatric Surf Club and

Tuesday the 14th - Rise Above Plastics meeting at 7pm. 'Trash is not food... or is it? Plastic Marine Debris from an Ecotoxicological Perspective.' Chelsea Rochman, a third year PhD student in the fields of Marine Ecology and
Environmental Toxicology who's dissertation work is focused on the trophic effects of adsorption of persistent organic contaminants (PAHs, PCBs, OCs, and PBDEs) to plastic debris in the marine environment as well as desorption of
contaminants from plastic debris (BPA and phthalates) into the marine environment and its inhabitants. Come here Chelsea talk about how toxicants associated with marine plastics transfer to the food chain and consequently any adverse
effects that occur when trash becomes food. Last summer she visited the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre as part of the SEAPLEX science crew with Scripps Institution of Oceanography. This fall, she will journey across the South Atlantic with
the non-profit group 5Gyres to explore toxicological questions regarding plastic marine debris if and when we come across another large plastic accumulation in the South Atlantic Gyre. The meeting will be held in the UTC/La Jolla area

Wednesday the 15th - General Chapter Meeting/Mixer at 7pm. In a effort to kick off Coastal Cleanup Day and Tijuana River Action Month, this month's chapter meeting will focus on Beach Cleanups and Border Sewage and is honored to
have Bob Scott give a presentation. Bob is a Professional Geologist and Certified Hydrogeologist at URS Corporation here in San Diego where he has been employed for over 20 years. He currently manages its local site assessment and

trash and sediment that gets transported downstream from Mexico during rain events. The information that his team has collected will help in developing a program to address this problem. Bob will share the results of the study and work
that is currently being done in the valley related to trash and sediment. We'll also cover general chapter updates and ways to get involved with Surfrider. You don't need to be a Surfrider member but it's always encouraged. This one is
