"Many fondly dub this favorite local
break 'IndoMar, Poopica, Pathetica, and Modesto-by-the-Sea,' due to its
crowds, pungency, and wild currents of unidentifiable foam. But the secret to Pacifica is knowing when to go and where, as evidenced by the film,
NorCal Project and winter days like Friday, January 13th, an eye-widening morning with perfect offshore winds. The peeling shoulders held perfectly rainbowed circles of sun-splintered
spray, haloing long and shortboarders alike. These
indelible moments of the intimate alchemy between surfer and element were captured with a Nikon D2h and a Nikon 600mm f4 lens." -- byron cleary with claudine solin
BYRON CLEARY is an
avid
kiteboarder, snowboarder, and skier who surfs his Merrick occasionally. He moved out from New Jersey to the West Coast in 1989 and began shooting professionally in his college days for the kayaking and equestrian worlds, from print ads to
product and action. An engineer by career, his lifelong passion for photography was influenced early on by his father, a military photojournalist for the US Air Force and through working with the well-established equine lensman, Dirk
Gallian of JumpShot Photography. Today, he enjoys shooting extreme sports as a hobby and is a frequent contributor to Kiteboarding Magazine. The irrepressible 'BC' is a recent convert to snowkiting, which he has proclaimed as "the
backcountry alternative for lazy people."

Hope you like our new format! Wow, it's been quite the wild winter...Some
of us local women endured
Mother Nature's wrath during
our frigid Morro Rock contest heats -- pelting hail storm, a vicious wind squall,
and lightning on the horizon. But hey, at least those President's Weekend waves
were mostly overhead+ and still fun. Pedro Point Surf Club did well that weekend, placing second overall.
Congrats!
Ugh, it's not fun to be down and out with a winter
bug for the third
time...we're psyched for the March 12th Daylight Savings time change, some
springtime moonlight surfing this month, and better weather....but we're bummed
that Sunshine Makarow had to
shut down
Surf Life for
Women.
WIN
7+ SURFBOARDS from WOMEN ON WAVES
What Clark foam crisis? The
Women on
Waves organizers have worked hard to get
7+ raffle boards from SurfTech, Arrow, Coffey and more for
their benefit event. Buy your
raffle
tickets online or in person and
support the women's surf community! This super fun women's surfing
event still has novice and age-group
slots available.
Top finishers take home
gorgeous custom wood trophies by Teak Gillette and Hotline Wetsuits. The
10th WoW anniversary is chock full of entertainment, booths, and prizes galore.
Also meet World Champ Kristy Murphy and other women pros on hand... P.S. photos from WoW's
Surf Art
Benefit & Fashion fundraiser are now up, too.
SURF TRIP | BRAZIL
Need to escape to the warmth? We're off to Brazil post-Easter and may have a few extra slots on a 11-day "scouting" trip to the wave-rich spots between Itacare and Rio. It's the perfect uncrowded
time to go. Email us for details or have travel tips to share. Sorry, Florianopolis
-- where Kelly Slater won his recent world title -- and visits to some of the surf islands will
have to be a future trip.
FANTASY
SURFER 2006 and "POINT BROKEBACK"
Can't surf? Entertain
yourself with the amusing "
Point
Brokeback," a
"Point Break" trailer
parody of Brokeback Mountain
(actually "BrokeBack to the Future" is better). Read
what the
New York Times had to say about all these parodies.
For the truly
bored, there
are tons of fantasy sports leagues to indulge in (if you missed out on the Fantasy
Fashion League, where the Oscars is the SuperBowl equivalent), whose growth
have made media companies and advertisers drool. For pro-surfing fans,
there's always Primedia's free
Fantasy Surfer contest, where you can join the 2006 season at any point. To
play, simply use your $50 million in fantasy money to draft and trade your team of 8 surfers who are valued according to their current rankings and
WCT performances. Prizes include winning a trip to Hawaii and/or a boat trip.

John has been
shaping for over 13 years and enjoys the customer education process. His
longboards and shortboards are popular in Northern California. We visited
with him after picking up a raffle board we won...
On the Clark Foam issue:
"This is simply creating
MORE options
for the smaller, grassroots custom shapers and their customers.
Without Clark's
close-tolerance plugs, serious shapers will be doing more actual shaping of
boards. The lack of
easy-to-finish blanks
will separate the folks who like shaping from
those who're passionate about creating unique, functional, hydrodynamic rides for
their customers. As of now, EPS (epoxy compatible foam) is here and we're busy
shaping away stronger, longer lasting, and a bit more environmentally
friendly boards. More
polyester compatible foam is coming from "all over the globe" to fill the void
left by Clark. We're testing them all to see which ones work best for
different applications, i.e. lighter, more flexible foam will be used for more
high performance boards. Denser, stiffer foams are better
suited for longboards. By springtime, Mystic will be offering a wide range of
CUSTOM foam/resin combos to meet YOUR surfing goals!"
2 Mile Surf Shop
Party & News:
"Come on out for
spring/summer
BBQ party & sale late April or early May, celebrating the worst time of year
for surf...Partly
due to the Clark Foam situation, we are stocking a wider range of
boards and price point options for spring/summer 2006 -- MORE SurfTech, Cobalt, Mystic, Rusty, and Pearson Arrow,
plus some "classic names" to divulged later to fill our newly
expanded board racks....For Stinson fans, our Stinson Beach location re-opens in mid-April for all your beach needs
as well...stop by and say hi! We're next to the Post Office at the only stop
sign in Stinson."

Islands in the Stream on the big screen! Released in 2004, the 42-minute
film by T.J. Barrack and
Wes Brown, (son of
Step Into Liquid's Dana Brown and grandson of Endless
Summer's Bruce Brown) is described by Surfer Magazine as "a groovy, Outer Tahitian Island boat trip with a handful of surfing's
most intriguing characters -- world champ Tom Curren, still the most stylish surfer alive;
Hawaiian chargers Tamayo Perry and Mark Healey -- living, breathing examples of the fully immersed waterman's lifestyle; plus six-time world champ Layne Beachley and the soul-arching slasher, Donavon Frankenreiter."
"In a nod to dad Dana, Wes and partner TJ let the surfers tell their stories, ultimately reaffirming the stoke we all share. And with long, hollow lefthanders as the stage, the stoke never
stops flowing." |

About
Tribal Surf's Swell Happenings
As the Northern California surf community continues to grow, we thought it'd be fun to put out a list of quality "surf culture" events in the area to help bring people together when not donning wetsuits.
Swell Happenings
is published 1-2 times a month and is a separate mailing from the "Tribal Surf Invites"
for special events we produce ourselves. We welcome event postings,
editorial content submissions, and inquiries for advertising, promotion and
