One Winter Story (10 min. trailer) - at 9:30pm with Elizabeth Pepin
One Winter Story is a rare glimpse into the adrenaline-pumped, male-dominated world of big wave surfing through the eyes of
SARAH GERHARDT,
a big-wave surf
pioneer and scientist. In the mid '90s, she had already become the first woman to paddle and tow into the massive waves of Hawaii's Outer Reefs, under the tutelage of legendary big wave rider Ken Bradshaw and her future husband, Mike
Gerhardt.
In One Winter Story, San Francisco filmmakers Sally Lundburg & Elizabeth Pepin follow Sarah through her next adventure, surfing the dangerous, monstrous waves of Mavericks through two brutal winter seasons. It's about trying to find
her place both in the line-up and in the world. See spectacular surfing by both men and women, from Santa Cruz to Mavericks. Stay tuned for the film's release in 2005.
Elizabeth Pepin is an Emmy-award winning documentary filmmaker for KQED and an avid surf photographer. Director Sally Lundburg is filmmaker, writer and artist with 3 short films under her belt. For more on

MEET special guest PAULINE MENCZER
A powerful big wave rider, lip attacker, and talented
tube-rider,
Pauline Menczer is one of the winningest pros in the history of women's pro surfing with 28+ world tour event wins. A 1993 ASP World Champion, this feisty Aussie from Bondi Beach has often been cited in the same breath as Lisa
Anderson as "the few, truly powerful female surfers who surf like the guys." Early in her career, Pauline was quite known for quickly putting the hammer down on the likes of Andersen, Pam Burridge and Layne Beachley. She's charged
12-18ft waves in Western Australia (Margaret River) and at Sunset, and is known to many as "Naughty Pauls" for her trademark silly antics out of the water during the pro tour.
Pauline is currently
competing in this week's O'Neill Coldwater Classic at Steamer Lane, Oct 20-24, 2004. Recent top finishes include winning the 2002 World Qualifying Series and the 2002 Fosters Pro, plus 3rd in the 2004 Maui RipCurl Pro. She continues to
be a Top 16-ranked world tour performer and has starred in over 15+ surf movies without ever attracting the serious attention of major sponsors. Small, fiery and immensely likable, Pauline has never had it easy -- she overcame family
tragedies and fought an incredible lifelong duel with crippling rheumatoid arthritis throughout her career. Her exclusive board shaper is Vic Otten of StickGirl (
www.stickmansurf.com). Enter the raffle to win one of her boards!
