about STEVE HAWK + His WAVES Book

Faithful readers of Surfer Magazine will remember with fondness the thought-provoking intros of former editor Steve Hawk. His most recent contribution to the surfing world is his book, " WAVES," which debuted June 10 from Chronicle Books.

"The goal of the book, Hawk writes, is "to illustrate the many shapes, textures, impacts and hues that make up the visual drama of ocean waves as they interact with shore." After seeing the book and enjoying Hawk's powerful, poetic writing, you will never look at a ripple on the water's surface in the same way.

The hardcover, 132-page book is an impeccable collection of 100 stunning images from New Zealand to Newfoundland, Fiji, and the Aleutians, and are paired them with insightful ruminations on the science and poetry of waves. With work from world-renowned surf photographers such as Art Brewer, Jeff Divine, David Pu'u, Wayne Levin, Rob Gilley, Andrew Kidman, Sean Davey, Vince Cavataio, Tom Servais, and Joel Meyerowitz, Waves will captivate all those with a passion for the sea.

Take a sneak peak at photos & pages of the book....Here's also sample excerpt from Waves:

"Too often, surfers lapse into anthropocentric idiocy when they encounter good surf, as if a cleanly peeling wave had been designed with their pleasure in mind. This kind of thinking, of course, is why humans continue to muck up the planet: we think it was made for us.

And yet, sometimes it seems that waveriding does have a place in the natural order. Pelicans air-surf a few inches above breaking waves, using the ever-shifting updraft to fuel their down-coast commute. Seals bodysurf with a style and speed that men wearing Speedos and fins only dream about. Dolphins torpedo through the curl line in the exact position that surfers seek, then launch into the air as the waves close out.

There's no Darwinian explanation for such goofiness. Time spent riding waves is time spent away from the things a person or a harbor seal needs to do to survive: making money, raising babies, catching fish.

Or maybe Darwin could explain it. As animals move up the evolutionary ladder, they get smarter. As they get smarter, they get more efficient at feeding and protecting themselves, and thus have more time to play. That's why ants never relax, and why dolphins make surfers look like dorks."

STEVE HAWK was editor of Surfer Magazine for nine years and then became executive editor of Swell.com and Surfline.com for two years. He helped start the Tony Hawk Foundation and ran it for two years. Now, he is the Senior Editorial Consultant for Primedia's Action Sports Group, which includes Surfer, Surfing, SG, Skateboarder, Snowboarder, Climbing, Canoe & Kayak, Powder and Bike Magazines. He is an avid journalist and lifelong wave-rider. He resides near Half Moon Bay, California.

MULLETUDE
Complete with mullets and sexy bombshell backupdancers, Mulletude is a band not to be missed! They are an over-the-top, hard rock act who puts on a fantastic show packed with all the swagger, antics, and saw-toothed grooves of the "hair metal" bands they pay homage to.

Randy Ross, Josh Bassett and crew combine rock solid drumming, earth-shakin' bass, scorching guitar wails, and screamin' wild front-man antics, all wrapped up in skin-tight leather, scarves, and serious attitude.

Mulletude will get you rockin' with favorite 70's and 80s classics -- Guns 'n Roses, the Scorpions, AC/DC, Aerosmith, Ted Nugent, Ratt, Van Halen, Def Leppard, Whitesnake, Quiet Riot, Motley Crue, Beastie Boys... need we say more?

SUMATRA SURFZONE RELIEF OPERATION
is a surfer-led relief operation that provides aid to the most remote islands of tsunami-impacted Indonesia. SSRO is headed up by Bill Sharp (industry consultant & producer of Billabong Odyssey & Billabong XXL contest), Surfer Magazine's Matt & Sam George, and Huntington Beach filmmaker Timmy Turner (Second Thoughts).
