LEAD San Diego Presents the LEAD Class of 2008
"Learn, Experience and Leave a Footprint"

The Class of 2008 Graduate Celebration was an opportunity for the Class to share the compelling and inspiring stories of their LEAD experience and work with six area nonprofit organizations. Many class members found their ‘civic passion' by working on these community service projects. Before an audience of 170 LEAD graduates, community stakeholders, and agency partners, The Leadership Action Team Members presented the impactful and energizing results of their work over the course of the LEAD Program. Here are a few of their stories...

THE STORIES OF LEAD 2008
"Our LEAD experience can most aptly be described as "Initiative in Action." Our class's most powerful common thread has been our will to make a difference by joining together as civic leaders. The true measure of our experience is in the inspiration that we've received to take action. LEAD has created a greater sense of responsibility and a sense of urgency in us to make a difference now."
- Erica Fessia

"Any leader who truly cares about making positive changes for the region should give serious consideration to LEAD. Like most of us in this year's class, one will quickly learn that "they did not know what they did not know." I would sum up the experience as educational, thought-provoking, tear-jerking, inspirational and one of the more rewarding experiences I've had."
-Shannon Erdell
'The in-depth seminars and the people I've met through LEAD have changed the way I view our City. I was able to meet people who I want to work with to make my vision for a better San Diego come true."
Woo-Jin Shim

LEADerTrends- Tourism and the Economy

Tourism means business--BIG business--for San Diego. As the region's third largest industry, tourism generated $7.7 billion in direct visitor spending in 2006 and employed approximately 164,000 people. While the visitor industry is vital to the economic welfare of our city, the industry, like our economy, is fragile. That's what we heard from the experts when LEAD partnered with Holland America Line and the San Diego Convention and Visitors Bureau to present a LEADerTrends event aboard the luxurious ms Ryndam.
Nearly 160 visitor-industry professionals, government, business, and civic leaders registered for the gourmet luncheon and discussion about San Diego's tourism and hospitality industry.

Moderator Lorin Stewart, Executive Director, San Diego Tourism Promotion Corporation, led the discussion featuring a panel of experts that included David Peckinpaugh, President & CEO, San Diego Convention & Visitors Bureau, Nancy Graham, President & COO, Centre City Development Corporation and Laurie Black, Commissioner, Port of San Diego.

According to the experts, the challenges we face - an inadequate airport and a convention center that is not large enough to accommodate the region's needs - have certainly hindered our progress. Our ability to market the region is also a challenge because ConVis has experienced drastic budget cuts over the past five years, while at the same time, competitive regional destinations like Anaheim and Las Vegas are spending more and more on marketing. The new visitor promotion funding model, the Tourism Marketing District (TMD), was recently approved by City Council and has begun operations. This will provide an infusion of revenue to promote tourism, a step the industry believes will benefit the region greatly.

Leadership Trust - The South San Diego Border Region

South Bay Leaders Say "It's Our Time!"
Just days before Leadership Trust members, LEAD board and staff boarded a bus for an informational tour of the South San Diego Border Region, the Union-Tribune ran opinion columns debating the economic development of Otay Mesa. Clearly, the future of this border community has attracted the interest and concern of local media, as well as civic leaders.

The first Leadership Trust meeting of 2008, hosted by Steve Williams, SENTRE Partners® and Malin Burnham, The Burnham Foundation, veered from its traditional dinner format and provided a first hand overview of this developing region, combined with an opportunity to discuss the regional and economic impact of its future with a panel of experts.

10News Leadership Awards

Since 2002, San Diego has partnered with KGTV Channel 10 and Sempra Energy for the 10 Leadership Awards program.

The 10 Leadership Awards program honors ordinary people who are doing extraordinary things to improve the quality of life in the San Diego region.

It consists of televised weekly segments, hosted by Channel 10 digital news correspondent Geni Cavitt, and provides a one-of-a-kind media opportunity each week to tell important stories of how everyday citizens are motivating, mentoring, serving, impacting and most importantly, demonstrating leadership in the region's diverse communities.

How does it affect LEAD? The partnership provides a unique opportunity to inspire even more good people to do great things. The program highlights leaders of all ages and socioeconomic backgrounds who are committed to building and strengthening the communities of the San Diego region – something that is central to LEAD's mission. It also embodies LEAD's ongoing commitment to promoting leadership through education, awareness and development.
