As the Core Curriculum Series hits the halfway mark, this year's 59 class members have already participated in five day-long seminars gaining insight into the Regional Economy, Education, Health & Human Services, Community Leadership and
Arts & Culture. Sessions have been marked by spirited dialogue and debate, team builiding, behind-the-scenes tours and incredible access to regional leaders such as Former State Senator Dede Alpert (pictured) ; Lou S. Spisto, CEO, The Old Globe; Thomas Wornham, Chair, San Diego Regional Economic Development Corporation and Susan Golding (78), CEO/President, Child
Abuse Prevention Foundation and former two-term Mayor of San Diego. Golding was particularly encouraging as she challenged the class to "think big when creating societal change and not be afraid to shake up the status quo."

The class (pictured at left in team buidling exercise at the San Diego Zoo) is also deeply entrenched in their Leadership Action Team projects, but took time out to enjoy a holiday reception hosted by the Mingei Museum. Music was
provided by young members of the San Diego Youth Symphony. LEAD Board members, Program Advisory Council and the Class of 2007 joined the festivities, sponsored by Amylin Pharmaceuticals.
Do you know someone who would benefit from getting a "Master's Degree" on San Diego? Applications for the Class of 2009 will be posted on the LEAD Website by early February.

LEAD Graduate Profile - Marilyn Sawyer (84)
|

|
As long-time relationships go, Marilyn Sawyer's ongoing commitment to LEAD San Diego might be one for the record books. As a young banking professional
at Great American Bank, she was interviewed by LEAD co-founder Phil Klauber over lunch downtown. Marilyn was a participant in one of the first formalized LEAD classes that also included Ron Kendrick, Cheryl Ayers/Kendrick and
Catherine Blair. It would guide her volunteer commitments for the next 25 years.
"I was one of very few woman executives so I was being placed on quite a few boards. I turned to LEAD to train me about salient issues in San Diego and help me be a more informed and valuable board
member."
That one year in class led to a career as a vocal and active LEAD supporter, board member (including Chair from 99-01) and effective advocate. "There's no other place in the region to really learn about the issues in a non-threatening way
with a diverse group of people. Being exposed to decision makers and being encouraged to voice your opinion is an amazing environment to grow and learn."
Three times is a charm for Sawyer. She rejoined the Board for the third time last year and continues to encourage the organization to enhance its programs, including the development of a CEO program to integrate newly relocated CEOs and
Executives into the region. Sawyer's other long- term relationship, her marriage to United Way President and CEO and LEAD graduate Doug Sawyer (85), continues to flourish as well.

Graduates Celebrate in Sky High Style

The LEAD Board of Directors and Graduate Council designed the annual LEAD Member Celebration as a special thank you to the ever-growing number of LEAD Graduates and to commemorate over two decades of outstanding leadership and
service to the San Diego region. It's a great way for graduates to stay connected to LEAD and to each other.
This year, over 150 LEAD Graduate Members celebrated in Sky High Style at the Ultimate Sky Box atop Diamond View Tower at the Ballpark. The incredible view and setting made for a memorable evening. The event committee, led by Victoria
Garrison (99), outdid themselves with the venue. The outdoor patio deck featured luxury seating and a fireplace while providing what many declared "the best view in San Diego."

The San Diego Business Journal recognizes several LEAD Graduates at their 14th Annual Women Who Mean Business Awards. Congratulations to Annie Glidden (06), Betty Mohlenbrock (93), Janene Christopher (93) and Lisa Richards
(94).
Former LEAD Board member Maggie Watkins (88) has been named director of marketing and communications for the Emeryville-based expert services and economic advisory firm LECG. She will be based in San Diego.
Kurt Chilcott (92) CEO and President of CDC Small Business Finance, has been elected to the board of directors of the National Association of Government Guaranteed Lenders.
Some classes really do stay connected, but the Class of 1994 is truly extraordinary. Graduate Council members Judy Lawton and Michele Nash-Hoff take the initiative each year in planning an annual reunion. Attending
the recent one were Steve Waterman, Jean Hellerick, Lawton, Nash-Hoff, Helen Bloomfield, Matt Giacalone, and Stephanie Casenza. More than a dozen were expected to attend but due to the October fires, there were some last
minute cancellations.
