By next spring, 59 talented and bright San Diegans will have been through an intense process of leadership development that may very well be transformational in terms of who they are and how they serve the region. The Core Curriculum
Series, the flagship program of LEAD San Diego, is a series of nine issue-oriented seminars described as a "Master's Degree" on San Diego. Graduates sit on boards, become more philanthropic and are more qualified and connected
to the community. When people like Doug Sawyer (85), President and CEO of the United Way, can connect with Dalouge Smith (07) President of San Diego Youth Symphony through their mutual connection to LEAD, that's a powerful
network. We welcome this year's class representing companies ranging from San Diego National Bank, SAIC, and Burhnam Real Estate to non-profits like The Girl Scouts, Habitat for Humanity to government agencies. We'll
keep you updated on their progress, as we see how their unique individual energy and team synergy makes an impact. Their potential to become future public servants, dedicated volunteers and/or more effective executives is enhanced
tremendously by their participation this year. Congratulations to all!

LEAD San Diego joins
The San Diego Union-Tribune in acknowledging the need to cultivate young and diverse leadership. Statistics from SANDAG point to population that will continue to grow more enthically diverse. Combined with an
aging population, our community must work to develop future leaders that reflect the diversity of our population. To address that issue, the Emerging Leaders Grant was created in 2002 in partnership with The San Diego
Union-Tribune to encourage and support Core Curriculum candidates from diverse communities. The Emerging Leaders Grant recipients are selected based on the potential value, energy and dedication they bring to community
leadership in the region. This year's recipients are Ana Melgoza, Director of Community Relations, San Ysidro Health Center; Jason Lacsamana, Program Associate, California Endowment; and Vicky Rodriguez, Director of Community
Development, MAAC Project.
LEAD San Diego is able to directly affect change in the non-profit community through the Service Learning component of the Core Curriculum
experience. Leadership Action Teams (LAT) are matched with area non-profits that need the kind of help and expertise that these individuals can provide. The partnership between the team and the non-profit is mutually beneficial.
Class members get a first-hand glimpse into the world of an underserved and under-resourced community while enhancing their leadership, teambuilding, relationship building, and collaborative skills. The organization not only gets a
valuable and tangible result, but builds relationships with team members that surpass the goals and life of the project. Former LAT members have become board members, volunteers and supporters of their partner organization. The
following organizations represent six promising efforts underway by 2008 class teams in the San Diego region:
A Reason to Survive (ARTS)
eXcel Youth Zone
Human Development Foundation
Join Hands-Save a Life
Pro Peninsula
San Diego Futures Foundation

"It was another milestone for LEAD San Diego! The feedback was great and the validation of LEAD's work from this high power group of civic leaders was incredible."
That was the response from Immediate Past Board Chair Steve Williams about the inaugural meeting of the Program Advisory Council. Ben
Haddad, Core Curriculum Chair and Andrew Poat, Program and Services Chair, facilitated the spirited discussion with top level community leaders including Ruben Barrales, San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce; Robert Kelly,
San Diego Foundation; Julie Meier Wright, Economic Development Corporation; Malin Burnham, Burnham Real Estate; and Mayor Jerry Sanders. They shared their insight and expertise and provided valuable information to help plan the
2007-2008 Core Curriculum program. In addition, they all agreed to serve in an advisory capacity to continue to help fulfill LEAD's goal of developing informed civic leaders who understand and can respond to quality of life
challenges that face our region.
